Why Does Your Car Need Nitrogen?

Have you ever noticed cars with those green valves on the tyres? Do you know what they indicate? Well if you were unsure, those are normally put onto tyres that have been filled with Nitrogen. I remember when it became a big thing that people were filling their tyres with Nitrogen many were unsure and rather hesitant about it. Well this is one time they would be wrong! Nitrogen filled tyres are awesome and have endless benefits. Let me welcome you to the world of Nitrogen.

Did you know that 78% of the air we breathe is in fact Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen! Nitrogen gas is a non-flammable, non-combustible and non-corrosive gas in its pure form. It’s completely environmentally friendly. It does not oxidise the rubber of the actual tyre from the inside like air does. As it is a pure gas, it does not hold heat and allows the tyres to run cooler.

I think it’s safe to say that Nitrogen filled tyres was a thing only really found in Formula 1 cars. In fact, it is even used in the tyres of all the space shuttles as well as the moon buggy. If it is good enough for outer space, then I’m definitely convinced it’s safe for Earth.

Let us go through some of the benefits of having Nitrogen filled tyres. There is a slower rate of pressure loss and you will have cooler running temperatures on your tyres. Due to the molecular structure of it, it differs from air, in such a way that it escapes through the tyres inner liner of tube at a much slower rate than regular compressed air. If you had to compare the rate of loss of air in the tyre, it would show that Nitrogen takes up to six months to lose 0.14kpa whereas compressed air could lose that in just one month!

Running your tyres at cooler temperatures show an improvement in tyre life of up to 20%, because by reducing the tyre temperature you are increasing its tread life. You will also find a great improvement in terms of road handling with cooler running tyres. As tyres heat up, their inflation pressure increases, which then reduces the size of the tyres footprint. This is the area that has contact with the road while driving. As its footprint decreases, so does the grip it has.

Nitrogen should also lead to reduced corrosion as unlike its counterpart air, there is no moisture in pure Nitrogen.

We cannot look past safety as a major part in choosing Nitrogen. The main three reasons for blow-outs are poor condition, overloading and under inflation. When it comes to under inflation, we need to be adhering to the recommended guide lines set out by tyre manufactures and fill our tyres with Nitrogen gas accordingly.

As it’s ever growing popularity has grown in South Africa, you will find that pricing has become more competitive as well. In closing, don’t compromise when it comes to safety, chose Nitrogen
