What is Nitrogen? Is it Good For Your Tyres?

What is Nitrogen

Nitrogen. At first glance, it can be rather daunting or scary when you see the word Nitrogen and often many people would turn away or just look right past it. If you have done this, don’t worry you are not the first nor will you be the last. There are many people who scoffed at the idea of putting Nitrogen in their tyres, but let me tell you, it’s one of the best things you can do.

So let’s first clarify this, naturally there would be air in your tyres but we are suggesting is that you inflate them with Nitrogen instead.

Thanks to the inert properties, tyres inflated with nitrogen are beneficial for highly specialised service applications in demanding environments, such as aviation, mining or construction.

Dry nitrogen mitigates tyre pressure variations, so nitrogen-filled tyres are also used in professional racing, where even the smallest changes in pressure can impact ultra-high-performance vehicle handling at extreme speeds.

So is Nitrogen right for your tyres?

After all, tyres are the very thing keeping your car in contact with the harsh road surfaces out there. Well, let us put it this way, it’s definitely not going to harm your tyres by using it. What will happen is that your tyre PSI will remain at a steady constant for a longer period of time. If you use regular air, your pressure will drop through permeation a little more quickly.

This is not to say that should you puncture one of your tyres that the pressure won’t decrease as fast as it normally would with regular it, Nitrogen does not act as a magic sealant. It does however maintain your constant running pressure which helps with tyre wear, consumption and overall driving experience.

So there you have it folks, the conclusion is that Nitrogen tyres are better overall compared to regular air.
